Swinging Through The Bamboo in Cannon Creek
I was supposed to be taking it easy. I had been sick for much of the past week, even going to the doctor and the hospital. But Saturday morning I found myself knee deep in the stream yanking on a tire under some old trees. At least I was not alone; I was part of the huge turnout for the Cannon Creek Greenway Cleanup. This was not the first time I had been here either. I took part in a smaller...

Tennessee Residents Demand Answers From Congress... →
Understandably in the anticipation leading up to yesterday’s inauguration, your political eye was probably not focused on what’s going on in the aftermath of the TVA coal ash spill. But last week Sarah McCoin and Tom Gizzard, residents of Harriman, Tennessee, showed up at Congress asking questions and bearing gifts of coal ash in mason jars. They also delivered hats with “Filthy Coal” written on...

Audobon Society Surveys JRP
Richmond Audubon Society recently did a survey of the James River Park System. Hat tip to Times Dispatch for this. Here’s a report on the day from Julie Kacmarcik. Another great turn-out for the 27th annual James River Winter Count today. This was probably the chilliest count in recent memory, starting out at about 5 degrees at sunrise and soaring up to 14 by the time we met at Mary and...

Meditating On My Stomach....And My Wallet
a shift of 20% of our food dollars into locally directed spending would result in a nearly half billion dollar annual income increase in King County alone and twice that in the Central Puget Sound region .  I highly urge you to check out the pdf file that the above quote links to and look the pie charts on p. 33.

Ex Comm, TGIF, Calendar
This past Wednesday the SCFOJ Executive Committee met for the first time in 2009. We sadly accepted the resignation of long time Board member, Annebel Lewis. We are very grateful for her service. At the meeting we also had several guests, some of whom may help fill vacated Board seats over time. John Wade made a small informal presentation on his plans for the upcoming Biggest Picture film...

The analysis, performed by Abt Associates, shows that meeting demand through efficiency yields hundreds of millions of dollars annually...

Solar Stadium in Taiwan Close to Completion →
How about for refurbished stadium on Boulevard or other complexes in Richmond? The solar roof, which emulates the form of a flowing river, can, depending on the strength of the sunshine, cover 75% of the energy needs of the stadium which can hold 55,000 spectators. On days when no competitions are taking place, the electricity generated is fed into the grid.
